The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
